Size: Moles are generally small, usually less than a quarter-inch in diameter (about the size of a pencil eraser). Any mole that grows larger or suddenly increases in size should be checked. Larger moles can sometimes be more dangerous.
Shape: Regular moles are usually symmetrical. If you draw a line through the middle, the two halves will match. Irregularly shaped moles, especially ones that have uneven borders or edges, need to be examined. An asymmetrical mole with a scalloped or notched border is a red flag.
Changes: Perhaps the most crucial factor to monitor is change. If a mole starts to itch, bleed, or become tender, or if it changes in color, size, or shape, it's essential to seek medical advice. Changes in a mole’s surface, such as scaliness, oozing, or a lump appearing, are also significant indicators.
