Gua Sha! What is it? Should you do it?

Gua Sha! What is it? Should you do it?

Here at Nashville Dermatology Physicians,  we often receive questions about the benefits and risks associated with various skincare tools. One such tool that has gained popularity in recent years is the Gua Sha applicator. Used traditionally in East Asian medicine, Gua Sha involves scraping the skin with a smooth-edged tool with the hope to “improve circulation and promote healing.” When used on the face, it is often touted for its potential to create a tighter, more youthful appearance. While there may be some benefits, it is important to also understand the potential risks.

Stated Benefits:

Improved Circulation: One of the primary benefits of using a Gua Sha applicator is improved blood circulation. The scraping action stimulates blood flow, which can help to nourish the skin cells and promote a healthy glow, though many hypothesize the ‘healthy glow may be the broken blood vessels that give a rosy glow.

Lymphatic Drainage: Regular use of a Gua Sha tool states it can assist in lymphatic drainage, reducing puffiness and helping to eliminate ‘toxins’ from the skin. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals who suffer from morning puffiness or fluid retention in the face. Our bodies perform such drainage naturally and such activities while anecdotally may feel good, if there are no issues for obstruction of lymphatic drainage, there is no scientific data this would do much.

Muscle Tension Relief: The gentle scraping motion can help to relieve muscle tension in the face, promoting relaxation and potentially reducing the appearance of fine lines caused by repetitive facial expressions. As this procedure is only momentarily applied during a given day, there is no conceivable way this can reduce fine lines.

Enhanced Product Absorption: Using a Gua Sha tool has been stated to 'enhance the absorption of skincare products.'  By incorporating it into your skincare routine after applying serums or moisturizers, you may help these products to penetrate more deeply into the skin. Again, while this sounds reasonable, there is really no way we can enhance absorption of anything on our skin, except perhaps to get the dead old skin cells off the top layer.  Possibly some sloughing of dead cells occurs with Gua Sha, but a microdermabrasion or peel combined with retinoids do a better job of this.

Risks:

Skin Irritation: One of the main risks associated with Gua Sha is skin irritation. If too much pressure is applied, or if the tool is used incorrectly, it can cause redness, bruising, or even broken capillaries. Individuals with sensitive skin should be particularly cautious.

Infection: Using a Gua Sha applicator that is not properly cleaned can introduce bacteria to the skin, potentially leading to infection. It is essential to sanitize the tool before and after each use.

Worsening of Certain Skin Conditions: For individuals with certain skin conditions, such as rosacea, eczema, or acne, the use of a Gua Sha tool may exacerbate symptoms. It is always advisable to consult with a dermatologist before introducing new tools into your skincare routine.

Temporary and Redness and Swelling: Some people may experience temporary redness and swelling after using a Gua Sha tool. While this is usually mild and subsides quickly, it can be concerning if not anticipated.

Permanent broken blood vessels:  For individuals with sensitive skin, such as those with rosacea or on medications that cause easy broken blood vessels, these vessels appear as blotchy skin requiring laser treatment to fix.

In conclusion, while Gua Sha applicators has been touted to offer several benefits for improving the appearance of the skin, after researching this procedure, I found it is important to use the applicator correctly and be aware of the potential risks. Always use a gentle touch, ensure the tool is clean, and consult with a dermatologist if you have any pre-existing skin conditions.
